Every Scout who joins the Group has to make the same promise and keep to the same law as every other Scout in the country. Although the promise and law may be worded differently in other countries, to allow for cultural and religious differences, these have the same meaning as those used throughout the world for members of the Scout Movement:

This promise and law is used for the Scout and Venture Scout sections, and also for Leaders.

The Promise

On my honour, I promise that I will do my best
to do my duty to God and to the Queen,
to help other people
and to keep the Scout Law.

The Law

  1. A Scout is to be trusted.

  2. A Scout is loyal.

  3. A Scout is friendly and considerate.

  4. A Scout belongs to the world-wide family of Scouts.

  5. A Scout has courage in all difficulties.

  6. A Scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property.

  7. A Scout has self-respect and respect for others.

The Salute and Sign

All Scouts in the UK make the same sign and salute, which are used at meetings, and at special events.

The Handshake

When Scouts shake hands, instead of using their right hand, as is normal, they use their left hands instead. This is because using your left hand is a sign of great trust.
